The first ever Pop Idol was a real Phenomenon which gripped the entire nation,
there was never a program like this before.
The first Pop Idol auditions were in Manchester. Gareth attended this event with his sister Nicola Gates.
she got knocked out and Gareth made the final ten to go to London.
The judges for pop idol were Simon Cowell, Nicky Chapman, Pete Waterman and Dr. Fox.
The total applicants from around the country was 10,000, hopefull wannabee pop idols,
these were whittled down to the final 10
to attend the final round in London.
Gareth moved into a hotel in London with the rest of the final 10 hopefull contestants.
Gareth made friends with the other contestants, will young and zoe birkett became
Gareth new and best friends.
The last 10 applicants performed in front of a live audience and millions of national TV viewers at home,
for the duration of 10 weeks, with one person being eliminated each week.
Finally the last week it was Will Young and Gareth Gates in the final.
Both will and Garth signed lucrative contracts with 19 management, overseen by boss Simon fuller
regardless of whoever won.
Will and Gareth became extremely good friends and there was no bitterness between
the two young men soon to become Mega Stars.
Will Young pipped Gareth at the post in a very close competition with each of them
receiving over 4 million votes each.
This was the start of a great new career for someone who came in second.
